History

The 1990 wing for Kettering Hall, incorporated in the 2002 Science Center complex, was named in honor of Oberlin alumnus Roger W. Sperry, a professor at the California Institute of Technology for more than 30 years. He shared the 1981 Nobel Prize in physiology/medicine and won the 1989 National Medal of Science. The Sperry Neuroscience Wing more than tripled the space available for the program in Kettering Hall. Its 5,700 square feet include teaching and research laboratories as well as classroom, equipment and office space. The 2002 Science Center project demolished the east wing of Kettering, and added a wing running north along Woodland Street from the west side of Kettering Hall that provided housing for new labs and classrooms for the biology and neuroscience departments. The Science Center unified all of the older and newer science buildings into one modern complex.
